The Arc, Ocean County Chapter is proud to celebrate March as Developmental Disability Awareness Month as a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions and challenges of individuals with developmental disabilities.
People with disabilities often face various barriers, from employment opportunities to independent living, but they also share the same ambitions, passions, and drive as everyone else.
Below are the voices of four individuals from our Journeys & Discovery vocational day program who highlight their unique experiences, goals, and advocacy for a more inclusive world.
Alexandra N. dreams of expanding her independence and finding ways to express her creativity. "To those who are having problems out there, you are not alone. Lots of people with disabilities struggle with getting money, travel and the resources they need to succeed." Her words remind us of the shared struggles and the importance of accessible opportunities for all.
Gabrielle E. is passionate about self-advocacy and ensuring people with disabilities have a space in the community. "It is important to have people see that individuals with disabilities are the same as everyone else. We have dreams and goals too." Through her efforts, she has already helped secure a new location for her social club, proving the power of advocacy.
Marshall K. envisions a future of independence and creativity but acknowledges the barriers along the way. "Other people with disabilities might have similar reasons why they can’t do what they want to do. Transportation, money, and the difficulty in finding a job are just a few of the barriers we face." Their perspective sheds light on the systemic challenges that often hinder progress for many in the disability community.
Tiffany B. takes pride in her hard work and strives for more opportunities. "The main thing to remember when working with people with a disability is to have patience and stay calm." Her words emphasize the importance of understanding and inclusion in the workplace and beyond.
This month, let’s take the time to listen, learn, and advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of ability, has the support and resources they need to thrive.
